Position Overview
Electra.aero, a next-gen aerospace technology company, seeks a dynamic and energetic Principal Mechanical Engineer. This role will lead the IPT design, analysis, test, and integration of vehicle subsystems on Electra’s 9-passenger hybrid electric eSTOL (electric short takeoff and landing) aircraft. The ideal candidate will have a strong background leading system design, analysis, and integration within a fast-paced, innovative environment.
We are seeking a candidate with the following key experience and skills:
- Manage and lead the development of vehicle subsystems, from system architecture through integration.
- Providing subject matter expertise, technical review, design guidance, and mentoring.
- Developing subsystem and component requirements compatible with safety, performance, and business objectives.
- Selecting and managing suppliers/partners, providing guidance to help meet the required integrated product engineering team deliverables.
- Managing functional and physical interfaces between the vehicle subsystems and the vehicle.
- Performing/reviewing analysis, modeling, and simulation to verify subsystems and components meet performance and safety requirements.
- Interfacing with customers, suppliers, partners, and internal stakeholders to ensure program alignment.
- Communicating information about vehicle subsystem design, requirements, and performance between the design team, management, customer, subcontractors, and vendors.
- Understanding program objectives and requirements to conduct trade studies and define architectures, requirements, and interfaces between subsystems.
- Preparing and presenting at gated design reviews to demonstrate the adequacy of the design.
- Minimum of 12 years of experience in mechanical engineering on air vehicles with bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering (or related STEM discipline); or 10 years and Master’s degree; or 7 years and PhD.
Required Skills:
- Experience integrating electrical and mechanical systems into air vehicles
- Experience with mechanical system design and integration for certification to part 23 or 25 standards
- Experience designing mechanical parts (CAD). Understanding of manufacturing methods (machining, sheet metal, composites, 3D printing, injection molding, composite lamination, etc)
- High competence with, and fluid use of, engineering first principles
- A strong work ethic and ability to independently meet and lead the areas described by the responsibilities and essential functions.
- Excellent organization and communication skills.
Desired Qualifications:
- Demonstrated knowledge of the Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs), certification procedures (especially Part 23), and relevant industry standards.
- Experience in Siemens NX CAD Software and Teamcenter PLM Software
- Experience developing aircraft subsystem layouts, performing architectural trade studies, and evaluating vendor performance data
- Experience in multiple vehicle systems (including landing gear, ice protection, thermal management, fire protection, fuel, etc.)
- Competency in engineering analysis, including structural, thermal, multi-body dynamics, and electrical
- US Person (Citizen or Green Card) Preferred
Location:
- Headquarters in Manassas, VA. To encourage close collaboration this position is 3-4 OR 4-5 days in the office, with some virtual work allowed
Electra's salary range for this position is: $104,000.00 - 264,000.00
Our salary ranges reflect the minimum and maximum range for the Company level overall across all locations & projects and does not necessarily reflect the budgeted amount for this position. Individual pay is based on additional factors, including project budgets, job-related skills, experience, relevant education and/or training, role, level, location, and project.

Working Conditions
Work is typically performed in a warehouse/aviation and office environment, which requires proper safety precautions. Work may require some physical effort in handling light materials, boxes, power tools, prototypes, and different materials or equipment. Due to the nature of our business and projects, some fieldwork may be required, working in both indoor and outdoor conditions. You may need to lift up to 50 lbs.
